Rubyspot Damselfly

This Rubyspot Damselfly (Hetaerina americana) has a favorite perch near the river's edge, where it awaits a juicy, unsuspecting insect for lunch. Hetaera in its scientific name refers to ancient Greek courtesans, a special class of educated female companions. However, it is the male, such as this one, that has a bright metallic red thorax.
