The beautiful Green Violet-ear (Colibri thalassinus) adorns many highland tropical gardens. The subspecies found in Costa Rica was, in the past, considered a separate species. It mostly inhabits the mountains, but can sometimes be found at lower altitudes after the breeding season. They prefer an open habitat and will feed in yards and gardens that have flowering plants. It has iridescent blue-green plumage with a glistening patch on the upper breast. The ear coverts, which extend to the neck, are a glittering dark violet. The outer tail feathers have a turquoise blue band
