Magnificent Hummingbird 3108

This young male Magnificent Hummingbird (Eugenes fulgensis) is getting really to dazzle as his feathers gradually molt into its multi-colored adult plumage. It is a large hummingbird that breeds from the mountains of southwestern United States to western Panama. It inhabits the edges of oak forests from about 6,000 feet to the timberline. It is the only member of the genus Eugenes. Like most hummingbirds, its food is nectar, taken from a variety of flowers, and some small insects which contribute protein to its diet. Magnificent Hummingbird males perch conspicuously and defend their feeding territories aggressively.
